Sizing by audience:
- 28–32" (3 burners): feeds 4–6 people, fits most patios
- 36" (4 burners): handles 6–10 people, ideal sweet spot for most homes
- 42" (5 burners): entertaining 10+, multiple-zone low-and-slow
- 48–56" (5–6 burners + side burner): serious entertaining or commercial use
Clearances (built-in grills):
- 12" minimum clearance from combustible structures on both sides
- 18" minimum above the cooking surface — no overhang within this window
- Insulating sleeve required for masonry installations on most premium brands
Clearances (freestanding grills):
- 24" from siding, fencing, or any combustible surface
- 60" overhead clearance for pergolas or covered patios (and never use a fully-enclosed structure)
Gas line sizing:
- Premium grills 80,000+ BTU typically require 3/4" rigid gas line
- Long runs may need larger; check the manufacturer's spec sheet
- Have a licensed technician install all permanent gas connections
