For most households: a pellet smoker that lets you set it and walk away. Memphis Elite (built-in or cart) is the premium pick at $3,500-$5,000. Traeger Timberline is the mid-range $1,500-$2,500 option. Big Green Egg XL is the lifetime-piece ceramic smoker at $1,400. All three handle a 14-lb bird at 275°F — the only variable is how much you want to fuss with it.
Different trades. Smoked turkey (around 5-6 hours at 275°F for a 14-lb bird) has crispier skin, more depth of flavor, and lets you free up the oven. Deep-fried turkey (45 minutes) is faster and juicier but needs more space outdoors + strict safety protocols. A lot of experienced cooks do both — smoke a 10-lb for crispy-skin presentation, fry a 14-lb for juiciness.
At 275°F with a pellet smoker or kamado: roughly 20-25 minutes per pound. A 14-lb turkey lands at about 5-6 hours. Use a probe thermometer and pull at 165°F in the thickest part of the breast, 175°F in the thigh. Rest 30 minutes before carving — temperature keeps climbing 5-10°F after it comes off the smoker.
Depends on when you order and what you buy. In-stock small items (thermometers, pellet bags, smoke tubes) ship within 2 business days. Grills and smokers under 100 lb ship within 3-5 business days. Full-size pellet smokers over 150 lb ship LTL freight — 7-14 days. Order by November 10 to be safe for Thanksgiving Day.
A dual-probe like the Thermoworks Signals or ThermoPro TempSpike. One probe stays in the turkey, one monitors the smoker temperature. Alerts on your phone when the bird hits 165°F — so you can go watch football, start the sides, pour a drink, and not blow the main course.
