The ONO Charcoal web site is a wealth of information about this wonderful charcoal. WHAT IS KIAWE?Prosopis Pallida (syn. Prosopis limensis) is a species of mesquite tree. It has the common names Kiawe, huarango, and American carob, as well as "bayahonda" (a generic term for Prosopis) and "algarrobo blanco" (usually used for Prosopis alba). It is a thorny legume which is considered an invasive noxious weed in many places.We are sure you have some questions... “A Hawaiian Tradition” “Made in Mexico”... What’s the deal?Well, this is an interesting story...Ono Kiawe Charcoal did indeed originate in Hawaii. Kiawe is a wood directly related to Mesquite. In the early 1900’s cattle were transported from Texas and other southern states to Hawaii. Now cattle poop a lot. And in this poop were seeds from mesquite trees that just happened to grow very well in the rich volcanic soil of Hawaii. The Hawaiians recognized the fabulous burning characteristics of this wood and began producing Kiawe charcoal.Ono Charcoal wanted to bring their wonderful charcoal to mainland USA but producing it in Hawaii and shipping it to the USA just doesn’t make any business sense if you want to be price competitive. So they started producing Ono charcoal in Mexico using the same family of wood.
